Run Away Boat Causes Captain to Fish over Christmas Holidays

Capt. Tony Bessant and boat owner Phil Conklin were surprised to see the F/V C.J.R. being towed back to the Seven Seas dock in Georgetown yesterday morning.  Apparently the Mate onboard the C.J.R. had one too many and decided to take 4 strangers and a dog for a late evening joyride.  After backing full throttle into the bow of a giant shrimp boat, the mate drove the boat full throttle 2 miles into the harbor before he ran the boat a ground on Rabbit Island where they would remain for the evening.

U.S. Coastguard, SCDNR, Georgetown City Police, and Georgetown County Police were all there to greet the bandit and his accomplices upon their arrival to the dock.   Owner Phil Conklin and Capt. Tony Bessant are taking a hard hit financially due to this man’s reckless behavior.  The F/V C.J.R. will have to be hauled completely out of the water and repaired, which will take a week at the least; this isn’t good news since Grouper goes out of season January 1.  Pictures to follow…
